We had a fascinating experience the other day. We found a huge butterfly (roughly 4 inches wing-tip to wing-tip) that had apparently just newly ‘hatched’. It couldn’t fly and as we were watching it starting the struggle and flap it’s wings, the cats seemed to take an interest. So we ended up having to keep three cats at bay while the butterfly’s wings dried and it finally took flight. Of course it seemed like imminent disaster as it’s first hesitant flight took it into the goat pen where it was the source of interest for the two livestock guardian dogs, but it carried on out and upwards, last seen heading towards the house site before it disappeared from view.
